FAQs
Do I have to take BIOL 1107 and BIOL 1108?
No, technically you can take any of the Sciences listed in the bulletin under Area D in the core curriculum. BUT there are some things you need to consider. First, the psychology department recommends Biology, Chemistry, or Physics for preperation for and as a prerequisit for PSYC 4290 Neuroscience. These three disciplines will help you succeed in those classes. Many students come into college not having Biology since their freshman or sophmore year of high school. If that is the case you might consider taking BIOL 1010. I have had a number of students do this to refresh themselves to Biology, then taking BIOL 1107 and possibly BIOL 1108.
The second thing to consider in deciding what science to take is that when you later go to graduate school, if you enter into a competitive program, they may at some point be considered based on the type classes you take in college. Having one of the above as oppossed to Astronomy, Geology, etc. can be a benefit to you at that time because they are more closely related to your major than the other sciences.
Can I take Anatomy for my Area D science?
No, the GA Board of Regents (BOR) does not accept anatomy as one of the lab sciences in Area D.
Can I complete my entire Area E with History classes?
You can only take 6 hours of any one subject in Area E.
What should I take for my minor?
I encourge students to take something that they like and that will enhance their psychology major based on what they plan to go into when they graduate.
Are there any courses that you recommend psychology majors take?
I encourage all psych majors to consider participating in an internship. Internships allow you to see if you really like a particular area of psychology or not. You will either love it, or figure out that that area of psychology is not for you. Either way your internship has been successful.
I also encourage you to consider what you plan to use your psych degree for, and then choose what psyc electives you take to fit in with those plans. For instance, If you are going into counseling, you should consider electives such as PSYC 4840, Counseling and Clinical Methods, PSYC 3600, Psychology of Women, PSYC 3520, Human Sexuality, PSYC 3181, Psychology of Aging, or some of the special topic classes like Drugs, Brain, and Behavior, or Mediation.
Where can I do my internship and what do I need to do to make it happen?
The psych department is very flexible about where you do an internship. Choose a site that will help you truly see what the area psychology you are interested in is like. There are lists available of past intern sites in the Career Services Offices. You can also see Dr. Cate, who oversees internships during Spring and Fall semesters, or Dr. Hatch who oversees them during the summer. If you choose a site that has not had interns in the past, you will need to talk to the site managers, and if they are in agreement, see Dr. Cate or Hatch, as there is paperwork that may need processing between NGCSU and the site before you can begin. You will also possibly need to purchase a short term liability insurance policy to protect you in case something happens to a patient. These policies are fairly inexpensive and can be found through your search engine.
